TV dominates the list of the top ten most sought after graduate employers in the media, published in The Guardian’s Work section on Saturday. The list was voted for by thousands of students in a poll for the Guardian UK 300, which was distributed to university campuses at the end of September.
For students who want careers in media, here is the list of the most popular graduate recruiters, generated for The Guardian UK 300 by the trendence UK Graduate Barometer Survey 2011:
- BBC TV
- Channel 4
- BBC Worldwide
- BBC Radio
- Guardian Media Group
- Sky
- Bloomsbury Publishing
- ITV
- HarperCollins
As The Guardian pointed out in its commentary on the research, there has recently been a rapid growth in web-based roles in this sector, such as pay-per-click analysts, but graduates looking for jobs in traditional print media are facing a struggle, as newspapers and magazines are increasingly laying staff off rather than taking them on.
Sioux Bailey, graduate recruitment consultant for PFJ Media Recruitment, told The Guardian, ‘It is increasingly difficult to get away with being a one-trick pony in the media sector. You need an understanding of online, for example, even if you are going for a traditional publishing job.’
The most common degree subjects of students interested in media careers were:
- Creative arts and design
- English
- Business, economics and management
- Languages,literature, classics
- Historical/philosophical studies
- Communications
The Guardian UK 300 also reveals that students interested in this sector are mainly female, and they are relatively unprepared in their career planning – although 83% agreed that it was going to be tough to get a good job in 2011.
