High street retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) has today started the search for 140 new graduates to join its team next year, as well as 60 students to undertake one-year placements with the business.
Each scheme is designed to find the industry’s future talent, and undergraduates on the Business Placement Programme (BPP) traditionally find permanent jobs within the company after graduation.
Roles up for grabs at M&S in 2012 include jobs in retail management, as well as specialist head office schemes such as product technology, food development and fashion design.
General buying and merchandising programmes are also being offered, while indicative of the changing face of British retail is the fact seven specialist e-commerce roles - to support M&S’s ambitious multichannel retailing growth - need to be filled.
Kay Jones-Wolsey, Head of Recruitment at M&S, commented: “In a fast-moving industry like retail, fresh and innovative thinking is essential to keep you ahead of the competition.
“Our graduate and BPP schemes provide us with a pipeline of new and exciting talent, enabling us to develop the next generation of retail stars.”
More than 11,000 applications were made to M&S’s graduate scheme last year, and those keen to work for the retailer from September 2012 have until this December to apply.
Meanwhile, it was recently announced that the application deadline for department store group John Lewis’s 2012 graduate scheme is November 15th 2011.
Graduates keen to work for the mutual retailer can choose from one of five disciplines, including corporate IT, corporate finance, retail management, buying and merchandising.
Like M&S, the company views the post-university roles as starting blocks to a long and successful career in retail.
Sophie Adams, Recruitment Manager at John Lewis, said: “We have seen many Partners progress through our graduate training up to senior management roles and we hope to see many more graduates achieve this with the combination of high quality training, interesting roles and generous reward schemes.”
