Swansea trading firm hopes to boost jobs market for graduates

Ringing bells, stripy shirts and red braces are usually the first images which spring to mind when you think of a trading floor.

But a rapidly expanding Swansea firm is proving trading in the 21st century is more about conducting business online in a quiet office.

OSTC already provides work for a 49- strong staff in the largest trading floor outside of London. Now, with financial support from the Welsh Government, it is looking to boost that number by 132 over the next five years.

The company is based in Swansea's SA1 docklands district and the majority of its staff are university graduates under the age of 25.

OSTC trades derivatives, which essentially means trading the difference between what a product such as sugar is worth now and what it could be worth in the future.

The company's Swansea office is run by managing director and Cardiff University graduate Michael Shirley, who said: "All of our offices are in cities offering the combination of good universities and non-traditional financial centres."

Fellow Cardiff University graduate Chris Jenkins from Chepstow works as an office manager for OSTC in Swansea.

The 26-year-old said: "This office offers careers in what is traditionally seen as a city of London job."

Pauline McDonald, head of careers and employability at Swansea University, said: "The company has already been in touch with us.

"We're always keen to work with companies moving into Wales, to help them find qualified and talented staff."

Business Minister Edwina Hart visited OSTC in Swansea yesterday and said: "This is a major expansion project that will help establish Wales as a growing centre for this highly specialised sub sector."
