A team of students from the University of Exeter has won the 2012 CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC), outshining 14,000 other students from around the world.
At the event, which took place in Sri Lanka, Kate Beattie, Adam Boadbent, Ronald Liong and Ben White – known by their team name ‘The Indivisibles’ – had to present a business case, demonstrating innovative and practical solutions, which was judged by a panel of industry experts from around the wold.
The GBC is designed to bring out the best in potential young business leaders and provide them the opportunity to showcase their talent on a global platform. The competition, which is held in partnership with Barclays, gives participants a taste of what it’s like to be a chartered management accountant. Each team is initially sent a case study to work on and asked to produce a 3000 word report. Shortlisted teams present their reports and face questions from a judging panel. The winning team from each country then presents its findings to an international panel.
The competition also offers participants a chance to meet some top employers (who act as judges), pick up some new skills, get advice from business leaders and decide if management accounting is the graduate career they’d like to pursue.
The delighted Indivisibles said of their win: ‘This is unbelievable – we have faced a gruelling six months to get to this stage. When we made it through to the final six teams, I think we all really began to believe we could actually win. This gave us focus and clarity for the final round of questions.’
Andrew Harding, Managing Director at CIMA, stressed the significance of the win: ‘The GBC is the most important student event in CIMA’s calendar as it gives the world an opportunity to discover the business leaders of tomorrow and allows these future leaders an opportunity to showcase their talents on a global stage.’
